It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Wife and the Somm in Glassell Park. It’s a cozy yet elegant eatery that, as I’ve said before, delights on many levels.

The husband and wife duo of Christy and Chris Lucchese, the wife and the sommelier, liken their culinary creations and impressive wine list as a love letter to food, wine and warm hospitality. And now Sundays are truly fun days in the San Gabriel Valley as they’re offering Sunday Brunch.

Sunday Brunch at Wife and the Somm is a natural extension of the team’s culinary vision, capturing everything guests love about this neighborhood gem from farm-fresh ingredients, seasonally inspired menus, an impeccable, ever-evolving wine list, and now, a dash of sunshine.

Menu highlights include warm slices of Clark Street Bakery’s Country Loaf served warm with whipped butter, Housemade Sweet or Savory Biscuit of the Day served warm and accompanied with whipped butter and seasonal jam, as well as Eggs with Caviar crowned with N25 Royal Ossetra, to hearty Chilaquiles layered with salsa verde, over-easy eggs and queso fresco.

Brunch imbibers can enjoy mimosas with Perricone Farms orange juice; Primo Spritz made with Treveri sparkling wine and Aperitivo di Vino; or you can do as I did and trust the Somm to guide you on a wine-paired adventure. Believe me, you’re in good hands here as I found all the wines paired with our brunch items to be solid winners.

We started our brunch with the delightful Juicy-Fruit Farms Summer Peach Salad with yellow and white peaches, mascarpone, agave-lime vinaigrette, honey powder, and mint. This is definitely a seasonal dish but as long as the peaches are in season, I really recommend this sensational salad. Pair this with a glass of white wine or even a light glass of sake and you’re in for a real treat.

A winner from the Toasts menu is the Royal Ossetra Caviar with eight grams of N25 caviar, crème fraiche, chives, toast points, Sicilian olive oil, and sea salt. The Toasts selections are way more adventurous that your run of the mill avocado toast. Other options include Tomatoes & Burrata, House Cured Scottish Salmon, and French Toast with challah bread served with seasonal jam, whipped butter and maple syrup.

Guests with heartier appetites should consider the Housemade Buttermilk Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich prepared with two scrambled eggs, Beeler’s Duroc bacon, and cheddar cheese. This is as good as brunchy comfort food gets.

But if you’re looking to share items or you’re just plain ravenous, the Chilaquiles with fresh corn chips, salsa verde, sour cream, queso fresco, and a sunny-side-up egg does not disappoint. There are a lot of bold flavors going on here, so you can almost pair your beverage with anything. The house still recommended a cool white wine and I was loving it.

Now the big brunch menu item is the Steak and Eggs with 4oz wagyu flank steak, two eggs any style, summer heirloom tomato rosatella (“pink sauce” that combines the flavors of marinara and Alfredo sauces), served with grilled Clark Street country loaf. This is another item that is perfect to share. And at this we switched to red wine and we never looked back. Truth be told, I rarely get steak and eggs but this is as good as steak and eggs gets. All taste buds were super satisfied.

As a starter item, we ordered the Housemade Cinnamon Morning Bun served warm with royal icing but our server decided to wait until the end of the meal to bring it saying it’s a very desserty dish and he was not wrong. It was the perfect way to end brunch—paired with a glass of Madeira (sweet fortified wine). This pairing was out of this world good. Even though there are dessert items to choose from, this one will be hard pressed to beat—although shout out to The Wife’s Basque Cheesecake, which rocks!

As I stated previously, time spent at Wife and the Somm is well worth the trip to Glassell Park. The setting is cool, the dishes are divine and the wine is wonderful.
