Amid life-threatening and devastating high-speed winds across the city, multiple wildfires broke out and spread from Pacific Palisades to Malibu, as well as in Eaton Canyon, near Altadena. At one point, more than 27,000 acres were affected—more than 2,000 structures burned down and more than 130,000 locals were under evacuation orders.
As a result of the fires, several restaurants burned. Below is a list of some that were lost.
Altadena
Rancho Bar — Destroyed by fire
Side Pie — Destroyed by fire
Fox’s — Destroyed by fire
Malibu
Reel Inn — Destroyed by fire damage
Cholada Thai — Destroyed by fire damage
Rosenthal Winery — Destroyed by fire damage
Moonshadows — Destroyed by fire damage
Per Eater, Reel Inn owners Teddy and Andy Leonard confirmed the destruction of the restaurant on Instagram while reporting that all of the restaurant’s staff were safe. The restaurant had served reasonably priced fresh fish and shellfish to locals, beachgoers, Pepperdine students, and Los Angeles tourists for the past 36 years. The Instagram post said they were “heartbroken and unsure of what will be left,” hoping that the California State Parks, the restaurant’s landlord, will allow them to rebuild some time in the future.
Also, per Eater, Cholada Thai had served traditional Thai cuisine with a beach view since the 1990s. Los Angeles Magazine favored the restaurant’s pad Thai, panang sea bass, and mango sticky rice in a 2017 review. Celebrity chef Giada de Laurentiis said it was one of her favorite places to eat in Los Angeles in an interview with Infatuation. Wife-and-husband chefs Sawai Theprian and Nikorn Sriwichailumpan first became the chefs of Cholada Thai in 1999 and eventually became the restaurant’s owners in 2000.
Moonshadows was a popular Malibu nightlife spot since 1966 (built over the former Big Rock Café). The bar gained national attention the night that Malibu resident Mel Gibson was arrested for DUI and went on a now infamous rant back in 2006.
Please be aware that many organizations are helping like Airbnb who is offering shelter, while Planet Fitness is opening its locations for showers, locker storage, and other amenities.
