On Saturday, January 13th, Morrison Hotel Gallery (MHG) celebrated an exciting new chapter in its history with the one-night only opening event of The New Wave, a carefully curated collection of breathtaking oceanic imagery from around the world inspired by HBO’s PGA and Emmy-winning documentary series 100 Foot Wave.
There were over 500 guests in attendance to experience these never-before-seen images displayed on an epic scale. Among those guests was world record setting professional surfer Garrett McNamara, Dogtown surf and skate OG Jeff Ho, executive producer and Amplify Pictures CEO Joe Lewis, and the cast and crew from 100 Foot Wave. Also joining the celebration were iconic Morrison Hotel Gallery photographers Henry Diltz, Mike Miller, Fred Pompermayer, and Laurent Masurel. The evening’s vibes were as elevated as the photography on display with beats provided by DJ Chris Holmes.
“Saturday night's New Wave event drew an unbelievable turnout and the atmosphere was genuinely electric” said Adam Block, CEO, Morrison Hotel Gallery. “The show drew a beautifully diverse and eclectic collection of guests and really testified to the appeal of work. We appreciate not only the incredible athletes and talented photographers represented by the New Wave, but also the spirited folks who gathered to celebrate and filled the room with such incredible energy.”
This one stunning exhibition featured numerous large-scale photographs from a select group of international photographers that highlight the beauty and extreme conditions of big wave surfing as never seen before. The New Wave Collection was thoughtfully curated by Morrison Hotel Gallery’s creative director Timothy White and showcases previously unreleased photographs by Tim McKenna, Fred Pompermayer, Helio Antonio, Laurent Masurel, Erik Aeder, and others.
The New Wave Collection is available for purchase via Morrison Hotel Gallery and MHG is considering the possibility of touring the exhibition. More details to be announced soon.
The evening was presented in association with Amplify Pictures, Library Films, and Topic Studios in celebration of 100 Foot Wave’s second Emmy Award (the series was nominated for six Emmys, the most nominations for a documentary series this year). Morrison Hotel Gallery created this collection to reflect the creativity and risks taken by the photographers and athletes who are true rock stars, while capturing the beauty, the power, and the rhythm of the ocean and to honor them and their work in this groundbreaking collection.
The HBO Original docuseries 100 Foot Wave is directed and executive produced by award-winning filmmaker Chris Smith, and executive produced by Emmy, Golden Globe, and Tony winner Joe Lewis. Ryan Heller, Michael Bloom and Maria Zuckerman also serve as executive producers for Topic Studios.
