HOW ART CAN TRANSFORM COMMUNITIES

Artists are partnering to improve areas and help create an environment for commerce. Art through the glass a project founded on Envision Broadway’s focus on reducing crime and promoting business in Chula Vista CA. The Genesis for using artists to achieve this goal was a lighting project aimed at lighting areas of Broadway Blvd left dark due to Covid’s impact on local businesses. Julio Martha a local artist and founder of the cooperative SDARTSociety was tapped by Envision Broadway to help. Julio relates, “I said we want to do more than lights we need murals for the lights to shine on!”  This he argued, would get local businesses and property owners involved. Julio Martha is now the chair of the Beautification Committee of Envision Broadway and oversees the still-active mural project.

Opportunity for changing the script on unrented storefronts in Chula Vista Mall followed. Julio and Yvette Roman created a relationship with the Chula Vista Mall to revitalize the empty storefront windows of unrented space. Using them as gallery space, local artists can share their visual arts. This has been a winning partnership. The opportunity to foster an area of the mall that invites visitors even if the stores are not rented has been working to begin new conversations with those visiting, as well as help steer future renters of the space to discover it.

With successes in both programs, Envision Broadway looks forward to keeping up the momentum. Knowledge is the power to learn more about the artists and future events go to ATTG. Either by Not for Profit or private business, the formula to enhance underused spaces seems to be better served when seasoned through the eye of the artist.
