Sometimes, missing what is in plain sight is something that we all do. Better than finding the cat standing in front of me was discovering the Murrieta Amphitheatre during its 2nd annual SoCal Jazz and Blues fest. The inviting outdoor venue was home to the 3-day festival, offering up some great talent for the audience.

Blood Sweat and Tears, Los Lobos and Shemekia Copeland, each headlining a day, were preceded by other accomplished and up-and-coming artists.

Opening the doors to the 3-day soundscape was Joel Soto. This player was mentioned as part of the opening act for War a couple of years ago. Now a wizened 15yrs old this growing talent has moved to fronting his own show backed by Rob Bolton and Oscar Ortiz of Parallel Groove along with Steve Artea guitarist with Redd House who have played with and help hone the sound of the young player during live shows at local spot Old Stump Brewing Company and other venues. His set was jamming from the start, with standouts from Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix showing off the dexterous flowing of his playing technique. Keep your eyes on this precocious musician. Orianthi worked some tunes and did not disappoint with her own hypnotic flourishes during her set. Blood, Sweat and Tears gave a rousing end to the first day’s events with known hits and recent songs. This ensemble act has always showcased the world’s best talent, you can find more on the present roster.

I was able to enjoy the vendors’ onsite as I walked the grassy park area behind the assigned seating in front of the stage. Thank goodness for Milford’s Mochas and Helix Treats for the free sample of espresso cookies and Jalapeno Kettle corn that bridged the gap! I also fueled up on some great empanadas from Empanadas Fresca, other great food options were available from Asian to Pizza. I also found some sore foot relief with lotion from Begin Botanicals. It has been a while since I have been to an outdoor multiday festival, and my dogs were tired! The feeling is reminiscent of the Playboy Jazz festival of old, now known as the Hollywood Bowl Jazz fest, with a picnic atmosphere punctuated by great music.

Originally, I was scheduled to attend the first day only; however, I was able to get back to see headliners Los Lobos on the 2nd day. Learn about the full lineup. The weather continued to cooperate while the iconic East Los Angeles band took the stage and gave the audience reason to move. People got up from their assigned seats to dance in front of the stage with abandon! The recent renovations have paid off for the Murrieta amphitheater. The upgraded space offers great sound and artist space to offer high-end acoustic experiences. The city seems to be invested in having this space thrive, which makes sense as the property also shares real estate with the Police Department and City Hall. This venue beckons local and out-of-area visitors with its ease of finding and navigating.
