DRINK UP TO CELEBRATE THE END OF PROHIBITION
Imbibers don’t really need a reason to drink. I’ll drink to that. See what I mean? Tis the season to drink but some days, especially Repeal Day, just scream “Cheers!”
Repeal Day this year happens Wednesday, December 5 and it is the celebration of the end of Prohibition. Yes, the Twenty-first Amendment back on December 5, 1933 made it legal to drink again, thus ending the great (failed) experiment. And drink and celebrate we will do this year at bars all over.
Once again Harlowe, as well as the other bars of the 1933 Group lineup, including Oldfield’s Liquor Room, Idle Hour, Sassafras Saloon, Bigfoot Lodge, Bigfoot Lodge West, and Thirsty Crow, will offer drinks specials such as a $1 Old Fashioned. Idle Hour will offer $1 Moscow Mules from 5-7 pm or until drinks run out.
But it looks like our good friends at Melrose Umbrella Co. will be Repeal Day HQ as they’re planning to celebrate in a big way.
“Angels Envy will be sponsoring and bringing 20 to 30 barrels to line up in the back patio,” says Umbrella barman Scott Eton.
There will also be free haircuts, a 1928 Ford Model A, an Angel’s Envy ice luge, and the revamped back space will be decked out to feel like you’re in a bootleg rickhouse (a warehouse used for storing barrels of aging whiskey).
“We’ll also have three live artists painting throughout the building, live performances that include 1930’s era music, burlesque and did I mention the knife thrower?” Eton adds about the festivities at Melrose Umbrella Co.
Wait, knife throwing?
I need to know more.
I’m not sure if this will be anything like ax or hatchet throwing. But I’m in!

The Eureka! chain, with locations in Hawthorne, Woodland Hills, Huntington Beach, and Cerritos, is partnering with Templeton Rye Whiskey and will offer a $5 Templeton Rye Old Fashioned all day long. The bar program will also debut its Gingerbread Man Old Fashioned featuring Old Overholt Rye Whiskey, house-made Gingerbread Syrup, Douglas Fir Liquer, chocolate and herbal bitters. This holiday cocktail takes your traditional Old Fashioned and showcases the signature Eureka! flair. The limited-time libation will be available through New Year’s Day.
In honor of the 85th Anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition, Budweiser and Jim Beam are hosting celebrations across the America—even the beloved Clydesdales will march through the streets of New York City delivering beer. On a national scale, the two brands are encouraging employees to leave work for a national toast at 5:32pm—the exact minute the repeal was ratified 85 years ago.
