THE HOLLYWOOD CORNER
A LOCAL FAVORITE DELIVERING GREAT COMFORT FARE
Affectionately known as The Corner by locals, The Hollywood Corner, located at the former Doughboys location on Highland Ave, has become a favorite spot for its comfort food staples.
Committed to providing warm service, and exceptionally fresh, creative and health conscious cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, The Hollywood Corner offers a casual and relaxed atmosphere. You can dine outside which is great for breakfast or brunch, or sit inside and take in the high ceilings and cool brick walls setting.
Extremely popular for lunch weekdays as well as brunch on weekends, we opted to check out The Corner on a random weeknight for dinner…and we were not disappointed.
Recently, The Corner launched a brand new $3 Beer Menu served every day, all day long. Beers on tap include: Barney’s Oatmeal Stout, Hoegaarden, Arrogant Bastard, and Stella Artois. Bottled brews are: Fox Barrel Hard Cider, Amstel Light, Corona, Heineken, Dos Equis Lager, and Newcastle Brown Ale.
The Hollywood bistro is also expanding its Appetizer Special to offer half price appetizers seven days a week from 5pm to close. Items featured on the discounted Appetizer Menu range from Fried Pickles, Crab Cakes, Chicken Wings, Artichoke & Spinach Dip, Caprese, Fish & Chips, and Grilled BBQ Chicken Wrap - regularly priced from $5.95 (Fried Pickles) to $9.95 (Crab Cakes), they are now all half price from 5pm to close.
We started our night with a couple of $3 beers and then opted to sample a couple of their hot soups…go figure! The Split Pea Soup was thick and hearty, albeit without ham which just didn’t seem right, but the Roasted Tomato Fennel Soup was extremely rich and flavorful…a total winner! Both were served with warm, fresh baguettes that really added to the flavor, as there’s nothing better than dipping your bread and soaking up the soup. This is comfort food at its best.
Looking for a healthy item we split the Quinoa Salad served with Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, scallions and carrots, and tossed with lemon, olive oil and vinaigrette dressing. This selection proved to be light and refreshing, and a good choice if your looking for something that’s tasty and good for you.
Something not good for you but just damn good and delicious (in a completely decadent way) is the Smac and Cheese, that’s right, Smac and Cheese, prepared with shrimp, Applewood smoked bacon, grilled corn, Roma tomatoes, scallions, and in-house made velvet three cheese sauce. Beyond rich, this one is made for sharing as trying to finish this dish by yourself will just clog your arteries, but what a way to go. This is so ‘last meal’ territory. Mac and Cheese never tasted this good.
Looking for something original, we had to go with the healthy Salmon Burger, made with grilled salmon with mint ginger lime mayo, soy glaze, sprouts and carrots. This was a filling and satisfying call. Good stuff for your taste buds and your body.
Wanting to try another original dish, well, at least an out of the ordinary selection, we went with the Tex Mex Pizza prepared with Pepper Jack Cheese, spicy pulled chicken, green chiles, corn, tomatoes, red onions, cilantro, avocado, BBQ sauce and Chipotle Aioli. Wow! This one is another must have. If you can’t beat New York style pizza, just go for something completely different and this one, served on a thin crust, is a hard one to top.
Famous for their Red Velvet Cake we opted to go with the just as decadent Whoopie Pie, a chocolate lover’s dream come true. The Corner has a knack for making things that are oversized and beyond good. What a treat!
And once a month, The Corner hosts the Hollywood Foodies outings where they prepare specially made meals for those with a discriminating taste in food and wine. Spots are limited to 20 people and sell out. This is definitely worth looking into.
